Japan Kondo Tatsuo – p The recently formed trio brings together creative artists who are not confined in genre standards. All of them are remarkable personalities also looking for inspiration beyond the art of music. The trio plays in Otomo Yoshihide Special Big Band, which will close this concert dedicated to Japanese jazz. Composer, music arranger, multi-instrumentalist Kondo Tatsuo has been involved in many groups and projects since the 1970s, including Kaneko Mari and Bux Bunny, GAS, Chakra, Unita Minima, Lovejoy, Otomo Yoshihide Special Big Band, Mihashi Mikako and Mokohan, Qujila, Pre-Cambria Clarinet Quartet and the piano duo 88 keys x2. He has collaborated with Ogawa Mishio, Hara Masumi, Mihashi Mikako, Otomo Yoshihide, Sugibayashi Yasuo and other well-known Japanese artists, and has taken part in projects of Phew and John Zorn. Tatsuo composes and arranges music for theatre, film and TV. He has collaborated with Kisaragi Koharu, Watanabe Eri, LABO!, and has recorded soundtracks for Kamome Shokudo, The Wonderful World of Captain Kuhio, The Kirishima Thing, and a number of commercials. The musician has already visited Vilnius Jazz festival in 2014 with Pre-Cambria Clarinet Quartet. The tuba player Kimura Jinya graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. As a member of Chanchiki Tornade since his study years, he has been playing a repertoire strongly influenced by Klezmer and traditional Japanese marching bands. Most of the members of Chanchiki Tornade later joined Otomo Yoshihide Special Big Band. He performs in various genres, including Dixieland-style brass bands, is a member of clarinettist Okuma Wataru’s Jinta-la-Mvta, takes part in street performances, collaborates with Klezmer and Japanese traditional music groups, singers, animators, film and TV people. Drummer and percussionist Kobayashi Takefumi plays Eastern and Western percussion instruments alongside traditional drums. He studied under Semba Kiyohiko, the leader of the Kabuki music ensemble Nagauta, and has also explored the music of Japan’s Edo period (1603–1868). Takefumi performs original solo shows. In 2018, he released his first solo album. He also is active with his own band Kin Kon Kan, collaborates with pianist Hayashi Masaki’s Ma Wo Kanaderu, vocalist Ogawa Mishio’s Fu•tautafu, Otomo Yoshihide Special Big Band and Sardine Head. In addition, the drummer has composed music for children’s TV programmes. In recent years, he has also led various workshops at elementary schools, concert halls and art museums across Japan. |
